Conservative responses to the partial release of documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the act,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities blacked out.
But some are not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“This is pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding those files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained no new data.
